Questions 37–40 with worked answers and printable practice.

Show your method. A calculator is optional. Prices, rates, and scenarios are fictional arithmetic examples.

  1. In the diagram, income is the blue line and expenses the red line. At which labeled month is income first greater than expenses?

  2. For a separate exact calculation, suppose income is $280,000 and expenses are $80,000. What is the surplus?

  3. Add the seven listed segment lengths to find the complete route distance.

  4. Add 2 hours 50 minutes and 3 hours 35 minutes.

Answers and explanations
  1. February. Compare the two lines at the labeled month.
  2. $280,000 − $80,000 = $200,000. These explicit values replace an overly precise question about a coarse graph.
  3. 30 + 30 + 90 + 43 + 21 + 162 + 25 = 401 miles.
  4. 5 hours 85 minutes = 6 hours 25 minutes.
