  1. A circle has radius 21 ft. Use π ≈ 3.14 to calculate its area to the nearest square foot.

  2. Eighty-three items sell for $0.50 each. What are the total receipts?

  3. Read the value indicated by the needle.

  4. A circle has diameter 18 inches. Use π ≈ 3.14 to find its circumference, to one decimal place.

Answers and explanations
  1. A = πr² ≈ 3.14 × 21² = 1,384.74, or 1,385 square feet.
  2. 83 × $0.50 = $41.50.
  3. 100. Read the labeled scale and intervening marks rather than guessing from the angle alone.
  4. C = πd ≈ 3.14 × 18 = 56.52, or 56.5 inches.
