Word problems 11: percentages and units

Questions 48–51 with worked answers and printable practice.

Show your method. A calculator is optional. Prices, rates, and scenarios are fictional arithmetic examples.

  1. If a bar reaches 1,250 on a vertical axis labeled “thousands,” how many people does that represent?

  2. A fictional $200 payment has a $40 deduction. What percentage is deducted?

  3. In the example budget, rent is 25% and gas is 13%. What percentage do they total?

  4. Which unit measures volume: liter, meter, or gram?

Answers and explanations
  1. 1,250 × 1,000 = 1,250,000. An explicit value replaces the ambiguous historical answer choices; no real census claim is made.
  2. $40 ÷ $200 × 100 = 20%.
  3. 25% + 13% = 38%.
  4. Liter measures volume. Meter measures length and gram measures mass. Container sizes differ by place.
