Algebra is arithmetic with a name for the number you do not know yet. Students who understand that sentence have cleared the main hurdle.
This section covers pre-algebra and introductory algebra: what a variable is, how equations balance, and the practice material that builds fluency.
Where students actually get stuck
The usual diagnosis is “they are bad at algebra.” The usual reality is narrower and fixable.
- The equals sign. Many students read it as “the answer comes next” rather than “these two sides are the same amount.” Every later error follows from that.
- Negative numbers. Sign errors account for a large share of wrong answers in otherwise correct work.
- Fractions. Algebra exposes weak fraction skills immediately, because variables do not make the arithmetic easier.
Here is the practical consequence. If a student is failing algebra, test the three items above before reteaching algebra. Two of them are arithmetic problems wearing an algebra costume.
What this section does not cover
This is pre-algebra and first-year algebra. Quadratics beyond an introduction, trigonometry, and calculus preparation are outside its scope.
