Choose one activity and follow the child’s interest. The aim is conversation and exploration, not completing every task or meeting a deadline.
Sort and change the rule
Use a few large, age-appropriate household objects. Sort by color, shape, or purpose. Ask, “Could we sort these another way?” Let the child explain their choices. Keep small objects away from children who may put them in their mouths.
Tell a picture story
Draw three pictures together: a beginning, something that happens, and an ending. Ask the child to tell the story while you write down their words. Read it back and invite changes.
Notice a change
Look at the same tree or outdoor view on two different days. Draw what you notice. Ask what stayed the same and what changed; guesses can become questions for another day.
A simple record
Write the date, the activity, one thing the child said, and a possible next step. Stop or adapt when the activity no longer fits. These are optional play ideas, not a developmental assessment.
