High School Reading List: Grades 9-12 Books by Subject

A verified grades 9-12 reading list grouped by subject, from classic fiction to nonfiction and science, with notes on choosing books by maturity.

This is a curated reading list for grades 9-12, grouped by subject and genre, built from real, verifiable books rather than an unsorted list of teacher activity guides.

Every title below is a real published book with its correct author, checked against a library or publisher record. The list favors classic and widely taught literature, plus a few nonfiction titles, across the subjects a high schooler is likely to study.

How should a parent or teen choose books by maturity level?

Choose books by reading the content warnings and reviews for a specific title, not just its grade-level label, since maturity in a book depends on its themes, not the reader’s age alone.

A “grades 9-12” label covers four years and a wide range of readers. Some books below deal with war, death, or difficult history. Read a summary and a few reviews before handing a book to a younger teen, and talk about difficult content together rather than assigning it in isolation. This section is general guidance. It is not a rating for any individual title below, since maturity depends on the reader as well as the book.

Fiction and literature

These are widely taught novels and plays that also work well for independent reading.

  • To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
  • Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
  • The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
  • Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
  • Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
  • Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe
  • Hamlet by William Shakespeare
  • A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry

Nonfiction and memoir

These nonfiction titles pair well with history or science coursework and introduce primary-source and long-form nonfiction writing.

  • The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank
  • Night by Elie Wiesel
  • The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot
  • Silent Spring by Rachel Carson

History and social studies

These books work as supplementary reading alongside a world or US history course rather than as a full curriculum on their own.

  • Guns, Germs, and Steel by Jared Diamond
  • A People’s History of the United States by Howard Zinn

These titles argue a point of view. Pair them with a standard textbook or your own US history and world history resources rather than treating either book as a neutral overview.

Science

These science books are written for a general reader and work well alongside a biology, physics, or earth science course.

  • A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking
  • The Sixth Extinction by Elizabeth Kolbert

This is a short starting list, not a full science curriculum. Pair it with your regular science coursework.
