Earth Science

Earth Science is a branch of science, which deals with the study of planet Earth. It is also known by the name of geoscience, which actually refers to the study of planets. There are two different approaches to geoscience mainly holistic and reductionist approach. The major subjects covered under earth science are physics, geology, geography, meteorology, mathematics, chemistry and biology.

Science is really an interesting subject as it is linked with our daily activities. There are various categories of science like life science, chemical science and physical science. Life science is related to activities that are linked with everyday life; physical science refers to study of the human body and lastly, earth science refers to study of our planet.

There are generally four spheres in earth, namely, the lithosphere, the hydrosphere, the atmosphere, and the biosphere. These spheres are related to rocks, water, air and life. However, some experts hold the view that there is another sphere known as the Cryosphere that forms a part of the hydrosphere and the pedosphere (Soil science dealing with soil formation processes).

The section of Geology is related with the rocky parts of the Earth’s crust as well as the history of its formation. The other subtopics of earth science are mineralogy and petrology, geochemistry, geomorphology, paleontology, stratigraphy, structural geology, engineering geology and sedimentology.

The two sub-disciplines, Geophysics and Geodesy, examine the figure of the earth, the reaction that it undergoes against the exertion of the forces, and determining the magnetic fields. The soil science refers to the covering of the outer layer of the Earth’s crust. Under this falls edaphology and pedology. The parts, which deal with the marine life or what you call the hydrosphere, are Oceanography and hydrology.

Atmospheric science deals with the earth’s gaseous parts in between the surface and the exosphere. Meteorology, climatology, atmospheric chemistry and atmospheric physics fall under its subparts. Biosphere is the most important part. It is related with the study of biology, which further consists of single-celled organisms, pine trees, people etc. Glaciology is another important section, which deals with the study of glaciers. This study too helps in investigating the icy parts of the earth.

Therefore, it can be concluded that earth Science is a very interesting subject to research with and you can always encourage your child to study the subject. Hang out in the stores and get your child exciting books on earth science to enhance his knowledge about the planet he is living in.
